The year
Launched, Not Yet Arrived
The long arc is the least constrained horizon, and it is stated as direction, not forecast.
The most probable honest answer for 2100 is that a gram-class flyby fleet has been launched toward Alpha Centauri and has not arrived. A launch around 2085 at 0.2c reaches the system around 2106, with data home around 2110. The beam belongs at Mercury: at 0.39 AU a 100 GW array needs about 56 km2 of collector, against 573,000 km2 at Pluto.
The interstellar program is a corridor, not a launch: Mercury for the beam, the ice giants and Pluto-Charon for volatiles and cryogenics, and the solar gravitational lens beyond 548 AU, where a 1 m telescope has the effective aperture of a 342 km one. The lens will likely image Proxima b before any flyby does.
Humans in 2100 are not a new species. Drift moves before selection, the phenotype that changes is developmental, and the augmentations that matter are dose tolerance, dust tolerance and excursion length. Earth remains the metropole, as it did for centuries in every terrestrial analogue.

What exists, what is still building, and how firm each row is. Detail lives on each destination page.

The human
A Branching Human, Not a New Species
More industrial environments, more medical baselines, more jurisdictions.
| Branch | Condition | Rated |
|---|---|---|
| Terrestrial | Biologically conventional; Earth still the demographic and institutional center | Modeled |
| Rotating worker | Wearable countermeasures; Earth-return capable | Modeled |
| Partial-gravity resident | Years at 0.16 or 0.38 g; permanent exposure history | Modeled |
| Off-Earth born | Developed under another gravity; may find Earth the hostile environment | Modeled |
| Fleet commander | AI and neural interfaces direct hundreds to thousands of machines | Modeled |
| Substrate-independent mind | Open research question; blocked by sufficiency, not compute | Modeled |
Genetic drift moves before selection, and cryopreserved genetic libraries decouple founder headcount from genetic diversity. The binding threshold for a second civilization is industrial: the time a settlement can keep operating after the last ship from Earth fails to arrive.

What has to be true
What Has to Go Right First
A sail with absorptivity below 10-5 across a 22% Doppler band, solar-pumped lasers near 5% efficiency, megawatt-class nuclear electric propulsion, and a way to steer the lens telescope at about 20 km/s a year to track Proxima b's image.
Contested
Deliberately Not Claimed
The load-bearing uncertainties, tagged with the confidence they actually earn.
2100 rests on compounding that has not started. It is the direction the near-term tests point, not a forecast with the footing of 2050.
Independence and containment pull against each other. A self-replicating industry is contained only if one input stays non-local - the same variable that measures Mars's independence, read the other way.
