Instruments · samples · the funding rule · status Q4 2026

Off-Earth science sells an environment - vacuum, cold, quiet, distance - and the constraint that binds first is measurement precision. What gets funded is what doubles as infrastructure.

What binds

Measurement Precision Binds First

The only part of the forecast where the binding constraint is information, not a physical flux.

LISA does not hold its arms still; it measures them and reconstructs the signal afterward. Knowing a quantity rather than holding it fixed is what makes picometer instruments buildable.

What it sells

Every Discovery Product Is an Environment Sale

Astronomy goes off Earth because it is being pushed. The far side of the Moon is the only place below the ionosphere's cutoff where the 3-30 MHz Dark Ages band can be observed at all, and the constellations are taking the twilight and low-surface-brightness sky: about 10,900 active Starlink satellites of roughly 15,000 in orbit in August 2026, China's Qianfan and Guowang planned at about 14,000 and 13,000, and 30,000 to 60,000 projected by 2030. Physics goes for baseline - Earth is 12,742 km across, and LISA, due in 2035, measures arms 2.5 million km long.

Materials and biology are elective: they go only where the absence of gravity, vacuum or the radiation field is the thing being bought, and that set is short.

Gravity enters materials processing in three places - buoyant convection, sedimentation and hydrostatic pressure. Everything else is cheaper in a chamber on Earth. The lasting monopoly is containerless melting of materials that cannot be held up electromagnetically. Cryo-electron microscopy has displaced most of the old protein-crystal case; what remains is drug formulation.

What gets funded

Science That Doubles as Infrastructure Gets Funded

Predicts a 2075 portfolio heavy on metrology, time domain and radiation biology, light on cosmology and exoplanets.

The second list is every question a general reader would name as the point of space science, and it is the list with no sponsor. The falsifier is dated around 2045: if a Dark Ages array or a solar gravitational lens mission is funded and under construction before a solar-system optical clock network, the rule is wrong. Every Discovery Economy falsifier is on the Falsifiers page.

Samples

The Receiving Facility Is the Long-Lead Item

Congress cancelled Mars Sample Return in January 2026, eliminating the Sample Receiving Facility, and ESA moved to cancel its Earth Return Orbiter; the tubes Perseverance cached in Jezero crater have no ride home. In August 2026 China announced the only Mars sample receiving lab on Earth, with Tianwen-3 returning samples around 2031.

The receiving lab flies nowhere and is cut first, which cancels a sample-return mission years before its launch. The same applies to any return from Enceladus, Europa or a comet.

The other samples come to us. 3I/ATLAS, found in July 2025 at 4.4 AU inbound, is the third interstellar object; Rubin, surveying since 30 June 2026, will settle within two to three years how many there are - current predictions span 0.9 to more than 100 a year - and turn a few days of warning into one to three years, enough for a parked interceptor.

Contested

Deliberately Not Claimed

The load-bearing uncertainties, tagged with the confidence they actually earn.

Modeled

Far-side cosmology is necessary, not sufficient. The Dark Ages signal is tens of millikelvin under a galactic foreground more than 105 times larger; LuSEE-Night expects to characterize foregrounds, not detect the signal.

Modeled

The sorting rule is half a prediction. Some pure science will be funded for its own sake; the rule says it will be the smaller share.
