What a market needs
A Market Is a Legal Artifact Before an Economic One
Four requirements; three are institutional and one is physical.
| Requirement | Kind | Off Earth | Rated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fungible unit | Physical | Water, propellant, compute-hours, scheduled beam access | Modeled |
| Delivery point | Institutional | A depot or plant both sides recognize | Modeled |
| Counterparties | Institutional | Too few: the sponsor set self-insures | Modeled |
| Enforcement | Institutional | Jurisdiction follows the registry, not the location | Modeled |
Physics supplies the unit; everything else is supplied on Earth. That is why settlement - the unit of account and the courts - stays terrestrial: light time is inside every settlement system's tolerance, and what would force a local currency is jurisdiction, not latency.
What sells
Three of Six Regimes Export Material, All to Local Customers
The sell side of each regime, and the constraint that binds first.
| Regime | Sells | Binds first | Rated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Earth Orbit | The environment: compute, manufacturing, position, free fall | Radiator area | Modeled |
| The Moon | Material to a local customer: bulk through the mass driver | Escape velocity, low enough | Modeled |
| Mars | Outside the economic frame | Winter power | Modeled |
| The Asteroid Belt | Material to a local customer: propellant and staging | Archipelago Δv; value density | Modeled |
| Outer system | The environment: bunkering, observation | Watts per kilogram | Modeled |
| Mercury | The environment sold as a commodity: collimated light | Heat rejection, then pointing | Modeled |
The maximum revenue from any deposit is bounded by today's world market for that commodity; the mass in the deposit is not an input. Goods that trade are the ones with no terrestrial market to destroy.
What trades
Water Is the Reserve, Propellant the Contract, Beam Access the First Liquid Instrument
| Commodity | Behaves as | Priced like | Rated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water | A stock: shaded ice costs almost nothing to hold | A reserve asset | Modeled |
| Propellant | A flow: cryogens need continuous power | A scheduled call on a plant, like fab capacity | Modeled |
| Compute | Priced from the demand side | Two tiers; latency-tolerant work converges, spread priced in time | Modeled |
| Beam access | Scheduled aperture time along a departure arc | A divisible, repeatable slot; payment enforced by withholding service | Modeled |
No material good has one price across the solar system. The spread between two depots is bounded by the Δv between them - the industrial map stated in money; see Corridors and Gear Ratio. Delivery is quantized by the synodic period, so a forward curve is a comb with teeth at each launch window and nothing between them.
Above about $700M an asset is uninsurable at any price - world single-risk capacity is about $709M at launch and $669M in orbit - so the sponsor set self-insures and no independent trading class forms to take the other side. A network of smaller, standardized, replaceable assets is easier to insure and finance than a few very large ones.
Claims on future lunar water or depot revenue - tokenized or not - are claims on cash flow, not ownership of the resource. Three questions decide what one is worth: what legally exists underneath it, when it can settle, and whether the holder can realistically take delivery.
The network
Three Variables, and One Is a Regulation
Tons a year off Earth, watts per kilogram in place, and crew-hours a year, which the dose ceiling sets.
Everything else in the Solar System Industrial Network derives from those three. Its growth rate is set by the least-closed process, not the most productive one, through the plant output ratio - tons of product a year per ton of installed plant - which nothing has measured and which an analogue plant on Earth could estimate. It is on the Experiments Board.
Findings that change with how cheap departure gets are findings about connection; findings that hold either way are findings about a place. Beamed departure thickens the inner system; it does not open the outer system, where arrival still limits everything.
| Case | Assumes | Result | Rated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low case | Cadence below its ceiling; space-nuclear specific power; limited closure | An Earth-centered core, a mature cislunar economy, scattered autonomous outposts | Modeled |
| High case | Cadence near the reusable heavy-lift ceiling; beamed power matures | The inner system runs as one logistics theater; the outer system stays a frontier | Modeled |
Orbital compute is the test of which case is developing. The metric is not a crossover year but the sustained growth rate: tens or hundreds of megawatts must compound for decades to reach the hundreds of gigawatts of terrestrial AI datacenter load.
China
China's Market Position
One owner across launch, stations, lunar base, deep space and compute.
| Program | Market role | Rated |
|---|---|---|
| ILRS · CNSA and Roscosmos | Rival claimant to the Shackleton cold traps and the lunar water | Projected |
| Tiangong · CMSA | State station; no commercial lease market | Observed |
| Three-Body Computing Constellation · ADA Space and Zhejiang Lab | First operational space compute; 12 satellites, up to 744 TOPS each | Observed |
| Long March 10 · CASC | Heavy lift owned by the same state as the customer | Building |
A state-integrated stack does not need a market between its own parts. Where US capability is split across firms that must contract with each other, China's is one balance sheet - which removes the counterparty problem inside China and leaves it in place between China and everyone else.
Contested
Deliberately Not Claimed
The load-bearing uncertainties, tagged with the confidence they actually earn.
Every value figure prices against today's demand. Treating the absence of a market today as a physical result is the same mistake as assuming one; new markets - a water market in space among them - will open.
Beam access assumes multi-beam operation. If a large array behaves as a single beam, the market becomes a queue.
