The Titan First Article

Four things separate this manifest from the Jovian one, and every difference runs Titan’s way except the queue. Radiation leaves. The radiator leaves. The road network leaves. The spares inventory nearly doubles.

The four differences

Lighter Than Callisto’s, and Twice as Far Away

Three of the four differences remove mass. The fourth adds it back.

Radiation is not a design driver. No shielding jacket, no bermed habitat, no storm shelter, no dose ladder for surface crew. The 85 tons of water that dominates the Jovian architecture does not appear here at all, because the atmospheric column is already 10.7 times Earth’s.

Thermal rejection is convective. The radiator comes out of the reactor’s mass budget and out of every process plant, subject to the coefficient nobody has measured.

Mobility is free. Six rotorcraft airframes at about 6 tons replace every rover, road and prepared pad in the lunar and Martian manifests.

Power is nuclear from article one. No solar prospecting phase, no hybrid architecture, no debate — the haze and the 14.8 W/m² solar constant together leave nothing to work with. Modeled

The manifest

Sixty-Two Tons, Delivered Without Landing Propellant

Aerocapture and aerodescent keep the arrival and the landing out of the mass budget entirely.

ElementMassRationale
Fission plant, 100 kWe class~12–15 tLighter than the Jovian equivalent: no radiator, convective rejection
Water-ice mine and melt plant~8 tThe oxidizer plant is the whole economy; sized against accessible ice at the site
Electrolysis and liquefaction~6 t7.30 kWh per kilogram of oxygen — the dominant electrical load
Nitrogen liquefaction~2 t0.039 kWh/kg; buffer gas, working fluid, cold-gas propellant
Hydrocarbon intake and polymer plant~5 tFeedstock is already liquid at the surface; no reduction step
Rotorcraft fleet, ~6 airframes~6 tReplaces every rover, road and pad in the lunar and Mars manifests
Robotic units and cryogenic manipulators~4 tCryo-rated actuation is the qualification risk, not the autonomy
Spares and consumable stock~14 tThe 7.1-year queue is nearly double Jupiter’s
Comms terminal and relay~3 tThrough a Saturn-orbit relay; Titan’s haze is transparent at radio
Total~62 tNo landing propellant in the budget

Modeled on the same basis as the Jovian and lunar manifests, and not independently reviewed.

Spares are the largest single line, and that is the Saturnian system stated as a mass figure. At Jupiter the dominant line is shielding water, which is a hazard problem. At Titan it is inventory, which is a time problem.

The Installation Does Not Have to Be One Installation

Titan is the only place in this Part where dispersal is not paid for in delta-v.

On the Moon, scarce terrain and power geometry reward co-location: permanently lit ridges and permanently shadowed floors sit next to each other at the south pole and everything crowds onto the same ground. On Titan, powered flight makes separation nearly free. Ice, hydrocarbons, communications geometry and operational redundancy can each pick their own site without a road network or repeated rocket hops connecting them.

With a seven-year replacement interval, that separation should be spent on surviving a loss rather than on convenience. Lose the polymer plant and keep the reactor, the mine and the terminal. Modeled

Titan is the destination where the local case for crew is strongest and the transit case is worst. The surface is forgiving and it is 9.58 astronomical units away.
