The physics
A Terawatt, Observed Rather Than Projected
The current system connecting Io to Jupiter’s ionosphere carries one to five million amperes.
Jupiter’s magnetosphere co-rotates with the planet on a 9.925-hour period. That rotation is faster than orbital motion everywhere inside about 2.2 million kilometers, so the plasma sweeps past everything in the inner system, and a conductor placed in that flow generates an electromotive force of v × B.
The Io flux tube dissipates on the order of 10¹² watts at several hundred kilovolts. That is not a projection. It is an inferred property of a system observed in the ultraviolet and radio for decades, and it makes the flux tube by a wide margin the largest continuously available non-solar power source in the solar system. Observed
The correction
A Terawatt Is About Five Percent of What Humanity Already Burns
The resource is real and the civilizational framing around it is four orders of magnitude off.
| Power | Kardashev value, Sagan formulation | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Io flux tube, ~1 TW | K = 0.60 | 5.3% of current human primary energy consumption |
| Humanity today, ~19 TW | K = 0.73 | The flux tube would be a rounding error on the world grid |
| Kardashev I, 10¹⁶ W | K = 1.00 | Ten thousand Io flux tubes |
| Kardashev 1.5, 10²¹ W | K = 1.50 | A billion flux tubes |
The flux tube is not a civilizational threshold and is not within four orders of magnitude of one. That does not diminish it. A terawatt delivered continuously and propellantlessly, from a source that also pushes the collector prograde, is the most remarkable power resource in the solar system and belongs in the long-arc map — as an extraordinary engineering object rather than as a transition. The argument for going is not that it crosses a threshold. It is that there is nowhere else this physics exists.
The property with no analogue
Power Generation and Propulsion Are the Same Device, Pushing the Same Way
Inside 2.2 million kilometers the plasma co-rotates faster than orbital velocity.
A tether extracting electrical power from that flow is pushed prograde. It gains orbital energy at the same time as it generates electricity, because the energy is coming out of Jupiter’s rotation rather than out of the tether’s own orbit. Every other electrodynamic tether in the solar system trades altitude for power. This one does not.
Nowhere else in the solar system is that true, and it is the single most distinctive physical asset the outer system possesses. Observed
The catch
The Power Is Exactly Where the Radiation Is
Current collection falls by a factor of 53,000 from Io’s orbit to Callisto’s.
| Moon | Relative velocity | Field | Plasma density | EMF per 10 km tether | Index |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Io | 56.8 km/s | 1,800 nT | ~2,000 /cm³ | 1,023 V | 52,826× |
| Europa | 104.3 km/s | 420 nT | ~100 /cm³ | 438 V | 1,131× |
| Ganymede | 177.3 km/s | 120 nT | ~10 /cm³ | 213 V | 55× |
| Callisto | 322.8 km/s | 30 nT | ~0.4 /cm³ | 97 V | 1× |
The index is the product of plasma density, relative velocity and field strength. The collapse is driven mostly by plasma density, which falls four orders of magnitude outside the Io torus.
Which makes any flux-tube tap four things at once. Robotic permanently, with no plausible human servicing. A consumable, with electronics lifetimes measured in weeks to months at Io-orbit intensities. Fed by a spares queue 3.82 years long. And obliged to transmit its output somewhere, because there is nothing at Io to consume a terawatt — so the tap is worthless without beamed transmission across 1.5 million kilometers to Callisto, or an on-site process worth doing at Io that nobody has proposed. Modeled
The verdict
Real Physics, and a Hardware-Survival Problem
The difficulty is set entirely by survival rather than by extraction.
The Io tap belongs in the 2075 map as a named possibility with an unretired feasibility question attached — the same category as the Callisto tidal tether. The difference from the Ceres space elevator is that the Ceres elevator turned out to be a procurement exercise, and this is not. Io-region hardware survival has no basis beyond extrapolated part qualification, and nothing has ever operated there.
The extraction side is settled. The plasma is there, the field is there, the current is there, and the physics has been read off ultraviolet and radio observations for decades. What is unproven is whether a collector and a transmitter can live in 36 sieverts a day long enough to pay for themselves, on a supply line 3.82 years long. See Io.
