The complete kit
Pluto Is the Only Body Carrying Water, Nitrogen, Carbon and Processed Organics on Its Surface
New Horizons mapped all four, in named terrain, on one hemisphere, in July 2015.
Water ice appears as bedrock in the Al-Idrisi Montes and the other mountain ranges flanking Sputnik Planitia — at 40 kelvin, water ice is structural rock and forms the basement the volatiles sit on. Nitrogen ice fills the Sputnik Planitia basin. Methane forms the bladed terrain of Tartarus Dorsa and coats high ground elsewhere. Carbon monoxide is present with the nitrogen. Tholins — reddish nitrogen-bearing organic macromolecules — darken Cthulhu Macula along the equator.
| Body | What is on the surface | Complete kit? |
|---|---|---|
| Pluto | H2O, N2, CH4, CO, tholins | Yes — all four classes, no processing overhead |
| Triton | N2, CH4, CO, CO2, H2O, tholins | Effectively yes, and unmapped at Pluto’s resolution |
| Titan | N2 atmospheric, CH4 liquid, organics in bulk | Nearly — the oxidizer needs crust penetration |
| Callisto, Ganymede | H2O plus silicate | No — no nitrogen, no carbon |
| Europa | H2O only | No, and COSPAR Category IV forecloses it |
| Enceladus | H2O plus trace organics | No, and protected |
Everywhere else the kit is partial, and the missing element is the binding constraint on the whole local economy. Titan’s missing accessible oxidizer is the Titan economy. Callisto’s missing carbon and nitrogen is why it imports structure. The Moon is missing nearly everything. Observed

Triton Ties on Chemistry and Loses on Mapping
Triton is a captured Kuiper Belt object — the same population Pluto belongs to — and carries the same volatile classes with carbon dioxide added. On chemistry the two are a tie, and Triton is 16 AU closer.
What Triton lacks is a map. Voyager 2 imaged one hemisphere at low resolution in August 1989 and nothing since bears on it. Pluto’s inventory is constrained by a full encounter with modern instruments: the Ralph imaging spectrometer resolved composition unit by unit, and the nitrogen basin has a measured area and an argued depth. Both bodies need an orbiter before a plant is designed against them. Pluto is the one where the flyby already answered what is present, as opposed to what might be. Observed
The tholins
The Organics Are Already Assembled, and That Is Chemistry Nobody Pays For
Tholins are not a contaminant on this reading. They are nitrogen-bearing organic macromolecules built over megayears by solar ultraviolet and galactic cosmic rays acting on methane and nitrogen — the products of a synthesis run that has been going since the body formed, at no cost, with the reactor being the surface itself.
Whether an industrial process wants them in that form is unsettled and this site does not claim it. What is claimed is narrower: the carbon on Pluto does not arrive as carbonate locked in rock or as carbon dioxide needing reduction. It arrives as methane and as processed organic solids, which is several steps further along than anywhere else in the outer system. Modeled
The caveat
Global Composition Is Not a Site Survey
The complete kit is a statement about the body. A plant needs all four at one landing site.
New Horizons mapped one encounter hemisphere at useful resolution during a single fast pass. That establishes that the four classes co-occur on Pluto. It does not establish that they co-occur within reach of a single operating site, at working depth, on terrain a vehicle can land on and a machine can excavate.
The distinction matters because the entire case for synthesis-free propellant rests on local co-occurrence, not global inventory. If the volatiles prove patchy at the scale of a few kilometers, the plant grows a transport leg and some of the advantage over a Sabatier train evaporates. That question is first on the reconnaissance gate, and it is the single measurement that decides whether the stockroom is a plant design or a compositional coincidence.
