James S. A. Corey

Leviathan Wakes · Caliban's War · Abaddon's Gate · Nemesis Games · nine novels, 2011-2021

The Expanse is the most-read map of a settled solar system. Its geography is mostly right; its drive is the one piece of engineering that makes the rest possible and cannot be built.

The Corey Works Read for Engineering

Each row names what the work is read for; the rating is the status of that technology today.

James S. A. Corey is the pen name of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, who wrote The Expanse together.

Where it held

Where the Engineering Held

Ceres sits at the center of the belt economy as a water port. NASA's Dawn mission found an ice-rich crust in 2015, and The Asteroid Belt puts Ceres in the same role: the belt's water and propellant hub, and the place where a short space elevator can work.

Nemesis Games drops stealthed asteroids on Earth. Kinetic energy at several km/s needs no warhead, and anything that can deliver mass cheaply from a shallow gravity well can deliver it as a weapon. Security treats the lunar mass driver as dual-use for exactly that reason.

Ice hauled from Saturn's rings by ships like the Canterbury is the right resource. The rings hold about 3 x 1019 kg of nearly pure water ice, already sorted by gravity, and gathering replaces mining.

Where it did not

Where It Did Not

The Epstein drive holds a ship at 1 g or more for weeks. The jet power of a rocket is thrust times exhaust velocity over two. At 1 g with a fusion exhaust of 1,000 km/s, a ship needs about 4.9 megawatts of jet power for every kilogram of ship mass. The best nuclear electric designs studied today reach tens of watts per kilogram. The Outer Solar System calls this the specific-power wall, and it sets every transit time past Mars.

Ceres is spun to give 0.3 g. Ceres is about 470 km in radius and its own surface gravity is about 0.28 m/s². A spin that produces 0.3 g, about 2.9 m/s², at the surface needs a 42-minute day, and the outward pull would exceed Ceres's gravity about tenfold. The body would shed its equator.

Ganymede is the outer system's farm in Caliban's War. Ganymede's surface takes about 0.08 sievert per day from Jupiter's radiation belts; Callisto takes about 0.0001. The Jovian System anchors the outer system on Callisto for that reason.

Industry echoes

Corey in the Space Industry

  • After Syfy cancelled the series in 2018, fans flew a banner plane over Amazon Studios, and Jeff Bezos announced the rescue at the National Space Society's International Space Development Conference that May. Amazon ran seasons four through six, ending in 2022.
  • Belter speech, low-gravity physiology and the Outer Planets Alliance gave a generation of readers a vocabulary for Who Goes - who would live in the belt and what it would do to them.

China

Chinese Programs and Corey's Concepts

China agrees with the Callisto ruling. CNSA's Tianwen-4, planned for launch around 2029-2030, targets a Callisto orbiter, not Ganymede. Tianwen-2, launched May 2025, is China's first asteroid sample mission.

Contested

Deliberately Not Claimed

The load-bearing uncertainties, tagged with the confidence they actually earn.

Modeled

Ganymede's own magnetic field. Ganymede is the only moon with an internal magnetic field, which gives it partial shielding inside Jupiter's belts. The field does not bring its dose near Callisto's.

Modeled

Ring ice routing. The Canterbury hauls ring ice to Ceres. Titan and the Saturnian System uses the rings as the water hub for everything past Jupiter, not as an export to the belt.
