Where it held
Where the Engineering Held
The Fremen stillsuit recovers sweat and urine and returns it as drinking water. That is the life-support loop on the International Space Station, which reached 98% water recovery in 2023. Water treats recovery fraction as the number that sets resupply mass at every crewed site.
Spice is one product from one place, carried by one transport monopoly, the Spacing Guild, and traded through one company, CHOAM. The structure is the single-source monopoly that interplanetary markets have to avoid. The real-world spice is plutonium-238: required, made only in Earth reactors, unavailable off Earth at any price and controlled by a supply chain the space program does not own.
The Kynes plan for Arrakis is the slowest terraforming in classic science fiction. Pardot Kynes and his son Liet plan in centuries, the Fremen bank water in hidden cisterns, and God Emperor of Dune shows a green Arrakis 3,500 years later. The pace is closer to Mars II: The Frontier than to Robinson's two centuries.
Where it did not
Where It Did Not
Herbert's universe forbids thinking machines - the Orange Catholic Bible's commandment reads "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind." Mentats do the calculating and Guild Navigators do the navigating. The ban survives because the Holtzman effect folds space and removes light time. In a universe without faster-than-light travel, every outpost past Ceres needs local decision authority; a Butlerian civilization could not run one.
Folding space through the Holtzman effect has no physics behind it, and the Guild monopoly depends on it entirely.
Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's Legends of Dune trilogy, drawing on notes Frank Herbert left, dramatizes the war: the machine intelligence Omnius and the robot Erasmus rule humanity until the Jihad destroys them. It is the clearest fictional case for an AI ban and a useful counter-case in The Human Layer.
Industry echoes
Herbert in the Space Industry
- Denis Villeneuve's Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024) brought Arrakis to a new generation; HBO's Dune: Prophecy (2024) is set 10,000 years before the novels.
- "Butlerian jihad" is now a standard term in AI policy argument for a deliberate ban on machine intelligence.
China
Chinese Programs and Herbert's Concepts
Tiangong runs regenerative water recovery and electrolysis oxygen, China's own stillsuit at station scale. On machine minds, China chose licensing over a ban: the Interim Measures for generative AI services took effect in August 2023 and require registration and review of models offered to the public.
Contested
Deliberately Not Claimed
The load-bearing uncertainties, tagged with the confidence they actually earn.
Spice as the plutonium-238 analog. The comparison holds on supply structure, not on scale: Pu-238 output is kilograms per year, and the space program is its only large customer.
The legacy books. The Legends of Dune trilogy is Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's work. The page credits it to them and does not treat it as Frank Herbert's text.
