The Asimov Works Read for Engineering
Each row names what the work is read for; the rating is the status of that technology today.
| Work | Year | Read for | Rated |
|---|---|---|---|
| I, Robot | 1950 | The Three Laws of Robotics | Building |
| Foundation | 1951 | Psychohistory; the Encyclopedia Galactica | Modeled |
| The Martian Way | 1952 | Ice hauled from Saturn's rings to Mars | Modeled |
| The Caves of Steel | 1954 | Robots in a crowded Earth city | Building |
| The Naked Sun | 1957 | Solaria: a few people, millions of robots | Building |

Asimov's Engineering, Concept by Concept
Each verdict is an editorial judgment; each concept links to the page that covers it.

Where it held
Where the Engineering Held
Solaria in The Naked Sun is a planet of about 20,000 people served by millions of robots, where labor is entirely machine labor and humans supervise from a distance. That is the ratio The Autonomous Workforce plans for past the Moon: a small crew, a large fleet, and the crew's time spent on the machines.
The novella "The Martian Way" sends Martian scavengers to Saturn's rings to bring back a chunk of ice when Earth restricts water exports. Asimov saw in 1952 that water is the commodity of the outer system and that the rings are where it sits pre-sorted.
Foundation is about an institution built to carry knowledge through a collapse lasting centuries. The Long Commitment treats institutional memory the same way: an asset that depreciates unless something is built to hold it.
Where it did not
Where It Did Not
Asimov's robot stories are a long demonstration that the Three Laws do not work. Each story turns on an ambiguity - what counts as harm, which order wins, what a robot can know. Machine behavior is not specified by short rules; modern AI safety work starts from that conclusion.
The Galactic Empire runs on hyperspace jumps, and psychohistory predicts the behavior of quadrillions of people with mathematical precision. No statistics of human behavior forecasts political events at that confidence.
"The Martian Way" moves a mountain of ice from Saturn to Mars by brute propulsion. The delta-v from Saturn's rings to Mars is several km/s, and hauling bulk ice inward is the case Titan and the Saturnian System rules out: the rings serve the outer system, not Mars.
Industry echoes
Asimov in the Space Industry
- Asimov coined the word "robotics" in the 1941 story "Liar!"
- The 2018 Falcon Heavy test carried Elon Musk's Tesla Roadster past Mars with the Foundation novels stored on an Arch Mission Foundation disc; Musk has named Foundation as a book that shaped him.
- Apple TV+ has run Foundation as a series since 2021.
- The Three Laws remain the most cited fictional framework in AI policy argument, usually as the example of what does not work.
China
Chinese Programs and Asimov's Concepts
China is building the robot workforce at scale. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued guidelines in 2023 to bring humanoid robots to mass production, and Unitree, UBTech and AgiBot ship humanoids today - see Autonomy.
Contested
Deliberately Not Claimed
The load-bearing uncertainties, tagged with the confidence they actually earn.
Got it right on the robot ratio. The verdict on machine minds is Open. Robot-heavy labor is the plan; general robot judgment is not yet built.
Psychohistory. The page treats psychohistory as fiction. No claim is made here that social outcomes can be forecast at that precision.
