Where it held
Where the Engineering Held
Mark Watney survives because every system on the Hab has a second use and he can make water, oxygen and food from what is on site. That is the No-Rescue Principle in MVP Baseline Viability Architecture: past the Moon nobody is coming, so every site carries plan B and plan C.
Watney digs up the plutonium-238 RTG buried for the ascent vehicle and uses it as a heater. A multi-mission RTG gives about 110 watts of electricity and about 2,000 watts of heat; heat is most of what it delivers. Energy names Pu-238 as the one input made only in Earth reactors.
The Hermes ship uses ion engines, and the Rich Purnell maneuver adds an Earth gravity assist to bring it back to Mars. Electric propulsion has flown on Dawn and Psyche, and pairing low thrust with gravity assists is how real deep-space missions are planned.
Artemis runs its lunar city on aluminum smelted from anorthite in the regolith, with oxygen as the by-product that the city breathes. Molten regolith electrolysis produces exactly that pair and is in development now.
Where it did not
Where It Did Not
The storm that topples the ascent vehicle and impales Watney cannot happen. Mars's surface air density is about 1.6% of Earth's, so a 100 km/h Martian wind pushes like a 13 km/h breeze on Earth. Weir has said he knew and kept it for the plot. The real hazard is dust on solar panels and in seals - see Hazards.
Astrophage in Project Hail Mary stores energy at the density of mass itself and releases it as light, a perfect photon rocket fuel. No substance does that; it is the one invention the novel needs and cannot justify. The relativity around it - acceleration, time dilation, years aboard against more years at home - is handled correctly.
Industry echoes
Weir in the Space Industry
- Weir, a software engineer, first published The Martian as a serial on his website; Ridley Scott's film followed in 2015, with NASA consulting.
- The Project Hail Mary film, starring Ryan Gosling, was released in March 2026.
- Artemis shares its name with NASA's lunar program, announced two years after the novel appeared.
China
Chinese Programs and Weir's Concepts
China's Zhurong rover went dormant in May 2022 and never woke, most likely because dust covered its solar panels - the real Martian weather hazard, not wind force. On the Moon, Chinese researchers flew lunar-regolith bricks to Tiangong on Tianzhou-8 in November 2024 to test them as building material, a step toward the regolith industry of Artemis.
Contested
Deliberately Not Claimed
The load-bearing uncertainties, tagged with the confidence they actually earn.
Regolith smelting at city scale. The verdict is Got it right on the chemistry. A city's oxygen from a smelter depends on power and throughput no pilot plant has reached.
