The Heinlein Works Read for Engineering
Each row names what the work is read for; the rating is the status of that technology today.

Where it held
Where the Engineering Held
In "Waldo," a man with a muscle disease builds remote manipulators that copy his hand movements. Remote handling arms in nuclear hot cells have been called waldoes since the 1940s, and the same principle runs every teleoperated robot on Autonomy.
D. D. Harriman in The Man Who Sold the Moon is a businessman who reaches the Moon by raising private money, selling future rights and building his own rocket company when governments will not. The SpaceX path from Falcon 1 to Starship is the closest real match, and The Hundred-Fold Reduction starts from it.
Have Space Suit - Will Travel treats a suit as a machine to be repaired, tested and trusted with a life, valve by valve. The Human Layer treats the suit the same way: the limiting part of every outside hour.
In The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, Luna's electromagnetic catapult ships grain to Earth and, in the revolt, throws rocks at it. Mass delivered from the top of the Earth's gravity well arrives with kinetic energy no launcher on Earth needs to supply. Security treats the lunar mass driver as dual-use for this reason.
Where it did not
Where It Did Not
Luna exports wheat to Earth. Earth grows grain at a few hundred dollars a ton; nothing shipped from the Moon competes. The Moon finds the Moon wins every market in cislunar space and none on Earth's surface.
Starship Troopers' powered armor carries a soldier through combat drops. Powered exoskeletons exist for lifting, but none carries its own life support, armor and power for hours in vacuum.
Industry echoes
Heinlein in the Space Industry
- xAI named its model Grok after the Martian word for deep understanding in Stranger in a Strange Land.
- Heinlein popularized TANSTAAFL - there ain't no such thing as a free lunch - in The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress; Milton Friedman later used it as a book title.
- Heinlein attended the Citizens' Advisory Council on National Space Policy hosted by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, and broke with Arthur C. Clarke over the Strategic Defense Initiative in 1984.
- Starship Troopers spent decades on US Marine Corps and Navy reading lists.
China
Chinese Programs and Heinlein's Concepts
China's carrier Fujian launches aircraft with an electromagnetic catapult, the technology family a lunar mass driver scales up. China's crewed lunar program, Mengzhou and Lanyue with the Wangyu suit, targets a landing before 2030, and the ILRS station would make China a second resident on Heinlein's Moon.
Contested
Deliberately Not Claimed
The load-bearing uncertainties, tagged with the confidence they actually earn.
Lunar independence. The Sovereignty Ladder places political sovereignty for a lunar population outside the 2075 horizon. Luna's revolt is a story about distance and grievance, not a forecast.
Founder-led spaceflight. The verdict is Got it right on the model of private capital building launch. It does not claim private firms will own the Moon; the Outer Space Treaty forbids national claims.
